FEEDING DIRECTIONS

Introductory Period: Following a seven to 10 day acclimation period, average consumption should be ½ to 1½ kg per head, per day for horses with unrestricted forage supplies. Position the blocks 15 to 25 metres from loafing, feeding and watering areas. Some repositioning of blocks may be necessary as animals become acclimated to the presence of the blocks. Move blocks closer to increase consumption; further away to decrease consumption. If over consumption occurs for more than two weeks and repositioning of blocks does not correct the situation, remove blocks and evaluate the overall feeding program. Do not allow starved animals free access to this block.

Feed one block per five horses. This allows all animals equal access to blocks.

Place tubs where horses congregate. Locate blocks throughout pasture, placing them near water and loafing areas. Maintain adequate distance between blocks (3 metres minimum).

Do not allow horses to run out of blocks. When a block is half- consumed, place a new tub near it. Horses should consume an average of ½ to 1½ kg per head daily based on a 500 kg animal.

Feed as the only self- fed source of protein, salt, other minerals and vitamins.

Blocks can be fed to animals in confinement. Exact location of the blocks to obtain desired consumption will vary between confinement feeding programs.
